The Ajax match between Edson Álvarez and Jorge Sánchez against FC Groningen in the Eredivisie had to be permanently suspended due to incidents in the verdiblanco team’s stands.
In a match corresponding to matchday 32, Groningen fans protested after the club’s relegation from the Eredivisie. This demonstration occurred with black smoke bombs that were thrown onto the field of play, just after minute 6.
During this situation, a fan invaded the field in minute 6, when he was suspended, to protest the relegation with a banner against the board, for which he was arrested.
After a 15-minute break, the game resumed but the referee had to stop the match again due to the projectiles that were thrown onto the field and this suspension was final, around minute 30.
So far it is unknown when the match will resume, although it is expected to be behind closed doors, as a sanction after the riots. In this match, the Mexican Edson Álvarez started, while Jorge Sánchez was on the substitute bench.
Groningen has 18 points in the general Eredivisie table, while Ajax is in third place with 63 points.
