Team India: New Zealand again! First cricket, now hockey… Team India’s dream was broken many times in the World Cup

Team India is out of Hockey World Cup 2023. In the crossover match played at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday (January 22), India suffered a 4-5 defeat in the shootout at the hands of New Zealand. With this defeat, Team India’s dream of winning the World Cup was again shattered. India captured the Hockey World Cup for the last and only time in the year 1975. If seen, New Zealand has always been giving pain to India in big tournaments.

Be it cricket or hockey, Team India has been defeated on many occasions in front of New Zealand in important matches. Who can forget the 2019 ODI World Cup played in England. Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, Team India made a place in the semi-finals of that World Cup by showing a great game. India faced New Zealand in the semi-finals. Fans were hoping that India would be able to overcome New Zealand, but the opposite happened. India had to face defeat by 18 runs in that semi-final match held in Manchester. That match proved to be the last international match of the great captain MS Dhoni.

India and New Zealand faced off in the final of the first season of the ICC World Test Championship, where the Kiwis won by eight wickets. In the year 2021, in the match held in Southampton, England, the Indian team could score only 217 runs in the first innings. After this the bowlers of Team India made a comeback and bowled out the Kiwi team for 249 runs. Although India was dismissed for only 170 runs in their second innings, due to which New Zealand got an easy target of 139 runs.

When snatched victory in knockout final

In the ICC knockout final of the year 2000 too, New Zealand had broken the hearts of the Indian fans. Batting first in the match in Nairobi, the Indian team scored 264 for six in 50 overs with the help of captain Sourav Ganguly’s 117 and Sachin Tendulkar’s 69 runs. In response, the New Zealand team was in trouble at one time after scoring 132 runs for five wickets. But, all-rounder Chris Cairns scored an unbeaten 102 to give the Kiwi team victory with four wickets and two balls to spare.

Gave pain in 2021 T20 World Cup as well

Due to the defeat against New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, the Indian team’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals were shattered. In that match played in Dubai, the Indian team was able to score only 110 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. In response, the Kiwi team had achieved the target set in 14.3 overs. Prior to that, New Zealand had defeated India in the 2016 and 2007 T20 World Cups as well. Not only this, the Indian team had lost to New Zealand in the ODI World Cups of 1975, 1979, 1992 and 1999 as well.

Now broken heart for the third time in the Hockey World Cup

This was the seventh match in the history of the Hockey World Cup between India and New Zealand. Earlier, there were six matches between the two countries, in which India won three and the Kiwi team won two. During this, New Zealand defeated India by a margin of 2-1 in the 1986 and 2002 World Cups. At the same time, the Indian team was successful in winning two times in the 1998 World Cup and on one occasion against the Kiwis in the 1982 World Cup. Whereas in the 1973 World Cup, the match between the two teams was equal to 1-1.
