The Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic (ACRD) presented this Wednesday a study in which it established that the 85.4% of those surveyed say they believe in miracles, while the 30.6% He considers astrology to be a science.
In the assessment of professions or activities, from a list of thirteen, the scientists occupy a tenth place along with the judges, only above the influencers and politicians who are the worst valued, the study emerged.
The ACRD released the first study of the “Social Perception of Science and Technology in the Dominican Republic”, in which “there is practically the same interest in receiving information on science and technology as on religion” and a 65.3% they consider themselves more informed regarding religion than science and technology (48.7%).
The work was carried out by the coordinator of the Basic Sciences and Technologies Commission of the ACRD, with the participation of Miledys Poyó as co-investigator, and with the “invaluable collaboration” of the international expert Libia Santos-Requejo from the Institute of Science and Technology Studies (Escyt) of the University of Salamanca (USAL), from Spain.
Besides, four out of five citizens (78.2%) are informed about science and technology compared to 19.2% who indicate that they do not.
From the results it is highlighted that the 48.7% of those surveyed consider that the Government is the one that contributes the most money for investigations.
“There is practically the same interest in receiving information about Science and Technology than religion and consider themselves more informed regarding religion (65.3%) than regarding science and technology (48.7%), the study concluded.
In addition, four out of five citizens (78.2%) are informed about Science and Technology compared to 19.2% who indicate not to do so.
Among those who do report, seven out of ten uses the Internet for this “and with a high weight” of social networks (68.8%) as the first search option compared to the rest of the media on the network, which includes books only used by 5.4%.
In addition, they use the specific media to a greater extent Facebook (460%), YouTube (32.4%) and Instagram (27.1%).
72.3% of those interviewed present a level of agreement with the statement “we depend too much on science and not enough on faith”.
Of those interviewed, 53.3% consider that the global warming it is caused by man compared to 45.9% who think otherwise.
