State agency and World Bank evaluate water management cooperation areas

The National Irrigation Technification Directorate (DTNR) received a commission from the World Bank (WB), with which it evaluated the opportunities for cooperation linked to the national irrigation strategy that the entity executes in favor of efficiency in water management for agricultural purposes.

The director of Technification, Carlos Caamaño Velez, said in a statement that he felt “very optimistic” and with “good expectations” around this meeting with a view to materializing concrete results.

“This is a young institution, which shows in a tangible way the will and the priority of the Dominican Government in advancing in the efforts to guarantee food security and sovereignty, especially in the face of the effects of climate change,” said the official when welcoming to the delegation, headed by Barbara Farinelli, World Bank Senior Agricultural Economist.

In this sense, he said that the commitments of the Water Pact propose an investment of US$972 million for irrigation innovation in the next 15 years, with which it is projected to impact some 350,000 hectares.

He stressed that the nutrition of the people, to a large extent, rests on what the institution he directs does, because water is a “determining” factor to be able to produce more food, both for local consumption and for export.

For her part, Barbara Farinelli thanked the invitation and recalled that this exchange is a follow-up to a visit made by Diego Arias, Agriculture Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean of the World Bank, to learn about the context and the demands of the Dominican Republic in terms of irrigation infrastructure improvements.

“Irrigation technology is very important and this meeting is an opportunity to identify areas in which the World Bank could collaborate with you; there are many entry points, it could be through the exchange of experiences with other projects or other countries, support for preliminary studies and even with an investment operation”, he stated.
