FIFA has suspended the head of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales for 90 days for kissing Spain’s female footballer Heni Hermoso on the lips during the World Cup final.
Lewis announced at a press conference on Friday that he would not resign. After that, the Spanish government started the legal process to dismiss him, but before that came the ban from FIFA.
“The Chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided that Luis Rubiales is provisionally suspended from all football-related activities at national and international level with effect from today,” FIFA said in a statement.
The ban will remain in force for the next 90 days from August 24. At the same time, Luis Rubiales has been ordered to refrain from all contact attempts with footballer Henny Hermoso and RFEF officials. The RFEF and UEFA have also been informed of the suspension order against Lewis, FIFA said in a statement.
Rubiales has sparked criticism after kissing Spain’s World Cup-winning star midfielder Hermoso on the lips at the awards ceremony after Sunday’s 1-0 win over England. All members of Spain’s coaching staff resigned in unison over the incident. In addition, until Rubiales resigns, Spain’s women’s footballers said they will not play any international matches in Spain’s jersey. Finally they are satisfied with the prohibition of Rubiales.
