Tensions are rising rapidly in the region with the USA’s involvement in the recently increasing tension between Turkey and Greece. The lifting of the arms embargo on Southern Cyprus by the USA last month also caused a crisis in the Turkey-USA line, and Turkey announced that it strongly condemned the decision.
SCANDAL ACCEPTANCE AGAINST TURKEY
Turkey was at the top of the agenda at the military ceremony held yesterday in Nicosia on the 62nd anniversary of the Greek Cypriot Administration’s independence from Britain. In his speech at the ceremony, President of Southern Cyprus Nikos Anastasiades claimed that Turkey is trying to increase tensions in the region.
“OUR STRATEGIC ALLIANCES PROTECT US”
Stating that the European Union (EU) membership surrounds Southern Cyprus like a shield, Anastasiades commented, “The strategic alliances we have established with neighboring countries and other EU countries, as well as other powers that understand and share our concerns about the new rhetoric of the Turkish government, protect us.”
“WE WILL NOT LET TURKEY DRIVE US TO CONFLICT”
Noting that they will continue to strengthen the Southern Cyprus army, Anastasiades said, “We will not allow Turkey to drag us into conflict.” Noting that they have taken military and political measures against Turkey, the Southern Cyprus leader said, “Nobody should have any doubts about whether we will sit and wait.”
