With their expert rackets they undid the equality they had inherited in the tie, after winning the Italian Lorenzo Sonego a Frances Tiafoe by 6-3 and 7-6 (7) and the American taylor fritz a Lorenzo Musetti by 7-6 (8) and 6-3.

The rival in the semifinals of the Italians will come out of the match between Germany and Canadawhich will also be played this Thursday.

The Italians reach the Davis Cup finals without their two best players, Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettiniboth injured, although the second remains officially in the team in case he improves during the week and the capital Filippo Volandri needs to have him.

They reach their first semifinal since 2014. They have only won one title, in 1976.

On the contrary, the United States, the team that reigns in the history of the Davis Cup, with a complete set of 32 salad bowls, He was lowered in his first commitment of the final to eight. They have not won the competition that they themselves invented since 2007.

The third best doubles player in the world ranking, Rajeev Ram, brand new ATP champion in Turin, is not in Malaga summoned by Fish. Instead, Paul was playing his first doubles match in a competition in which he debuted in 2020.

Bolelli and Fognini used their knowledge of being in the first sleeve to put an extra march in the final stretch: blank game at serve, break for 5-4 and rapid consolidation for the set.

They repeated the pattern in the following quarter, with break for 4-3. A direct kick from Fognini gave them victory and unleashed the party in the stands of the Martín Carpena, dyed blue by the numerous transalpine fans.

The day had started with a spectacular match between Lorenzo Sonego and Frances Tiafoe, in which the Italian put his country ahead by winning by 6-3 and 7-6 (7). It was an ibrant clash, of pure attack, carried out by two fearless players.

Sonego, number 45 in the ranking, did not lose a game on serve and transferred all the pressure to Tiafoe, 19 ATP and who accepted the challenge. The North American neither speculated nor deprived the public of Martín Carpena from his show.

The four unique breakpoints that Sonego conceded throughout the game, he solved them with his best weapon, the direct kick or the frank climbs to the net after the forced remains of the American.

“I was more aggressive than two years ago. I played against him in Paris and lost 6-4, 6-4. But today I have been very aggressive in my return and in my serve. I served very well on break points and set points,” explained the Italian.

But Lorenzo Musetti, number one of the transalpines before the absences, could not later with Taylor Fritz, on paper the fittest player in Malagaafter playing the semifinals of the masters tournament in Turin.

It was a quick points match. Fritz disposed of a set point to the rest in the first set, but finally failed to avoid the tie-break, the fourth of these finals. The tiebreaker was long, 10-8, whose outcome was reached after two set balls for each one.

Musetti, who started this year ranked 59th and is now 23rd, was unable to react in the next set. Fritz broke for 3-2 and he was consolidating the advantage without trouble.

The Italian doubles came to the rescue and unbeatably signed a decisive point and the ticket to the semifinals on Saturday.
