Former Sri Lankan spinner Sachitra Senanayake has been arrested by the Sri Lankan police for match-fixing. Senanaye surrendered on Wednesday morning and was arrested by the Sports Corruption Investigation Unit. Three weeks ago, the court banned him from traveling abroad.
Senanayake was accused of indulging two players in match-fixing in the 2020 Lankan Premier League (LPL) matches. He is said to have influenced two players to win matches without being present at the tournament. A sports ministry investigation unit is ready to file criminal charges against him, a police spokesman said.
The 38-year-old spinner has played 49 ODIs, 24 ODIs and just one Test for Sri Lanka. He also played eight matches for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2013 IPL. In 2014, he was banned by the ICC for illegal bowling action. Even though he returned to international cricket in 2015 with a new bowling action, he could not do much good. He played his last match for Sri Lanka against Australia in September 2016.
