FIFA World Cup 2022: ‘Our voice is being stopped…’, Germany furious over FIFA’s decision

Controversies are increasing continuously in the FIFA World Cup 2022 being played in Qatar. In this episode, the players of the German team covered their faces during the photo session before the match against Japan on Wednesday (23 November). The players of the Germany team were protesting against the decision not to wear ‘One Love’ arm bands.

Significantly, FIFA, the highest governing body of football, had said that if a player walks on the field wearing a One Love armband, then a yellow card will be shown against him immediately. The ‘One Love’ armband has been created to show solidarity with minority groups (LGBT+ community).

Germany has strongly objected to the decision not to wear ‘One Love’ armbands. Germany said, ‘It was not about making a political statement. Human rights cannot be compromised. It should be considered, but is still not the case. That’s why this message is so important to us. Denying us the armband is like stopping our voice. We are firm on our stand.

Seven team captains planned to wear the armband before the FIFA World Cup. An England captain Harry Kane was also included in these seven teams, who had to take the field wearing an armband against Iran. But even before the England-Iran match, FIFA issued a warning saying that players who do so will be shown a yellow card immediately. As a result, Harry Kane landed in the field without wearing a band. Among those who criticized FIFA’s decision are German coach Hansi Flick and the president of the Football Federation, Bernd Neuendorff.

Germany’s unexpected defeat

Talking about the matches, four-time champion Germany had to face an unexpected defeat by 1-2 against Japan. In the first half of the match, Germany made a great start by scoring a goal through a penalty kick, but in the second half, the Asian team Japan showed a brilliant game and scored two goals to win the match. Ilkay Gundogan scored for Germany. At the same time, the first goal for Japan was scored by Ritsu Don and Takuma Asano. In the FIFA rankings, the German team is at number 11 and Japan at number 24, so it would be called a big reversal.
