The billionaire businessman Elon Musk announced this Wednesday the launch of xAI, a new artificial intelligence company whose purpose, he says, will be “to understand the true nature of the universe.”
According to the firm’s website, the project will be led by Musk himself and has a team of a dozen people who have worked in companies such as DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research or Tesla.
The company plans to organize a conference via Twitter this Friday in which those interested can meet the team and ask them questions and is looking for engineers and researchers to join its staff, as indicated on its website.
Musk has warned in recent months of the dangers posed by the artificial intelligence and last March, together with other businessmen and researchers, he asked for the six-month suspension of systems “more powerful than GPT-4”, the latest model launched by OpenAI.
However, in April he had already anticipated that he was preparing his own project of artificial intelligence as an alternative to the systems developed by Google or OpenAI, an ally of Microsoft, which he criticized for being “being trained to be politically correct.”
“The danger of training the AI to be “woke” -in other words, to lie- is deadly”, he has come to write on Twitter.
As he said then in an interview with Fox News, his initiative seeks to be a “third option” and he trusts that, although he “arrives late” for the race, his project “does more good than harm”.
Musk is a co-founder of OpenAI, was one of its early investors and rose to serve as co-chairman. However, in 2018 he became a limited society (LP) and Musk left its board.
Since the company launched its popular ChatGPT on the market, Musk has argued that OpenAI would not exist without his initial investments, but he has also criticized the work done by the company on numerous occasions.
