Cata Coll: “We are footballers, not capricious people who ask for the sake of asking”

What does it mean to receive the Diario de Mallorca 70 Years Award, from the Prensa Ibérica group?

It is a pride that a historical newspaper recognizes us like this. I want to thank you for the visibility they give us whenever things happen and we win titles, it is very important for society. And thanks to newspapers like this, people see us and we can grow. Being from ‘sa Roqueta’ adds more pride in receiving this award.

Nominated for The Best award. It is an important step.

I didn’t imagine it and I didn’t believe it when they gave it to me. I am very happy because it is a reward for the work done. In any case, I prefer to win collective prizes than individual ones.

And Marratxí has named her Favorite Daughter of the municipality.

This really makes me feel super proud. Whenever I have free I go to Pòrtol. They have known me since I was born and it makes me very happy that my people recognize me like this and give me this. I would have never thought about it, I am very grateful.

He started as a substitute in the world and it ended up being very important. What did she feel when she heard his name as the headline?

I didn’t believe it. I am a very calm person and I stayed as always. I called my father on that famous call to release my nerves. I am a very self-confident person and if there is one thing I am good at, it is playing football. I was convinced it would turn out well.

That ball he caught in the air after a corner kick in the final minutes of the final. There she told herself that everything was already done?

Yes, I knew it was the last move. I said to myself ‘Cata, now or never’. And when I saw the ball come out I said ‘now’, I took it and looked at the referee, I think there is a video where you can see it, in which I tell him to blow the final whistle now. When I did it I breathed and told myself that she was already a world champion.

What does it feel like to have the star of a world champion?

I am still not aware of everything that has happened. In the end, an important issue has been mixed up that has covered up the fact that we have won the World Cup. And winning it would have to be the important thing. I hope we are recognized as world champions.

He lived everything that happened after the final and the days that followed. It was complicated?

It was very complicated, and I’m not Jenni who was the one who experienced it. If I have had a bad time, I can’t imagine how she has had it. Everything we have done is to seek structural and societal changes because these things cannot be tolerated. I think we are achieving it and it makes us feel very proud.

Patri Guijarro resigned from the call with the national team. Easier said than done.

She had a very different situation than ours and is totally respectable. If I tell you the truth, I completely understand her decision, I would have done the same if I had been her. She was very brave. If you have clear ideas and do not want to work, if this happens, it is understandable.

With everything that is happening around the selection and the RFEFHow do you approach a training session or a match?

In the World Cup we were very smart and we went to play and win it. We are footballers and it is what we want. The last concentration has been very complicated. The game against Sweden we told ourselves that we didn’t know how we had achieved it. I think we had to do it out of pride, because we are footballers, not capricious people who ask for the sake of asking. And from there it was better, we felt more comfortable.

At Barcelona, she had to go out on loan and play a secondary role behind Sandra Paños. How is it managed?

It’s not easy, because I came here when I was 18 and you came from playing everything. For as long as you can remember you have played everything. It hasn’t been easy, but it has made me mature a lot. I have learned that you don’t always have what you want, that you have to fight for it. Little by little I’m getting there.

They are giving an example to the world with the national team.

It’s what we want. We want girls to look at us as examples, that they can do it too, not only in sports, but in life. Everything can be achieved with struggle and work.

What advice would you give to a girl who wants to be a goalkeeper?

Enjoy. I always say. I enjoy what I do and that’s how I have fun. In life you have to enjoy everything: family, friends, work… That’s how you achieve things. So you enjoy it, you end up achieving what you set out to do.
