Candela C-8: this is the first electric (and flying) boat developed together with Polestar

In August 2022, PolestarSwedish electric mobility company, announced a partnership with Candela, manufacturer —also Swedish— of electric boats, with the aim of supplying regular batches of batteries and charging systems for new boats. Leaving, in addition, the door open for future projects.

With this announcement, Candela became the first company to receive components from Polestar, which until now had not distributed to third parties. Months later, the union is already bearing its first fruits. Proof of this is the Candela C-8 Polestar Poweredthe first completely electric boat powered by a Polestar battery, and which also has interesting features.

The Candela C-8, in fact, has really interesting features and very little seen on ships. The most important, however, is its battery. The Polestar Powered, specifically, features a 69 kWh battery packthe same as those included in the Polestar 2 and which, in this case, allows you to reach up to 57 nautical miles on a single charge.

“The Candela C-8 is the first electric ship that can travel to destinations that previously could only be reached by ships with combustion engines”

Says Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela.

The new Candela and Polestar ship, according to the Swedish manufacturer of electric vehicles, it can achieve two to three times the range compared to conventional electric seaplanes. At a speed of 20 knots, in addition, the Candela C-8 Polestar Powered can offer twice the range of other conventional electric boats.

Another interesting detail of the Candela C-8 is the way it navigates at sea. He does it, in a way, above the water level, as if he were flying. This is achieved thanks to the C-POD, the company’s electric motor, and also to the retractable C-FOIL system height adjustable.

For example, when the boat reaches speeds above 16 knots, they fully deploy, causing the boat to hang in the air. In other conditions, and to protect the engine, the ‘sheets’ can be completely covered, causing the draft – the lower part of the boat – to be submerged.

The Candela C-8 Polestar Powered will begin delivery during the spring of 2024. Its price starts from the 330,000 euros in its base configuration and can reach 421,000 euros. Including, yes, extras such as the fast charging option for 6,500 euros, additional furniture inside, etc.
