Brazil’s miserable loss to Uruguay

Uruguay beat five-time world champions Brazil 2-0 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier at their home ground, Estadio Centenario in Montevideo on Wednesday. Darwin Nunez and Nicolas de la Cruz scored the winning goals for Uruguay.

With this victory, two-time world champions Uruguay won against Brazil after 22 years. Brazil was a bit on the backfoot after drawing with Venezuela in the previous match. This time Seleção also lost the record of undefeated in 12 consecutive matches with Uruguay. This is Brazil’s first defeat in the South American region of the World Cup.

However, Brazil was ahead in possession of the ball in the field of Uruguay. But could not spread much influence in the attack. In the first half, Neymar-Jesus could not take any shot on goal.

Nunez scored the first goal for Uruguay in the 42nd minute of the match. The Liverpool striker headed Arauho’s cutback from the byline and found the net. Brazil received a second blow in the 44th minute. De la Cruz tackled Neymar from behind. Immediately, Neymar fell to the ground holding his left leg. He was later taken off the field on a stretcher. He was replaced by Richarlison. In the second half, without Neymar, Brazil’s attack looked even more disoriented. As a result, they did not return to equality. On the contrary, Uruguay scored another goal in the 77th minute. Nunez sent a great cross past two Brazilian defenders. De La Cruz did the rest inside the D box. As a result, the gap is 2-0. Brazil could not score any goals during the rest of the match. As a result, they have to leave the field with a 2-0 goal loss.

Brazil dropped to third place with 7 points from 2 wins and 1 draw in the World Cup qualifiers. Having equal points in the same match, Uruguay has risen to two on goal difference. The current world champion Argentina is at the top with 9 points in three matches.
