Sevilla were blown away by Atletico Madrid in the Spanish La-Liga on Saturday night. Diego Simeone’s side won the home match 6-1. And with this victory, Atletico Madrid has moved up to the third position in the points table.
A pair of Memphis Deep goals put the hosts 2-0 up in the 26th minute at home at the Estadio Metropolitano. Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco scored two more goals after the break. Alvaro Morata added two more goals late in the match. This big win was another proof of Atlético’s progress this year.
Yesterday’s match was Simeone’s 613th as Atletico coach since taking over in 2011. With this, Argentina has created a new record by leaving behind the late Luis Aragones. Atlético won two La Liga titles and one Copa del Rey title under Simeone. Simeone has created the mentality to fight on an equal footing with the two giants Real Madrid and Barcelona in the domestic competition. At the same time, Atletico are now regularly emerging as strong teams in both Europa Leagues.
This time, however, Athletico could not advance much, and had to withdraw from the group stage in Europe. La Liga did not sustain an early title run. But after the World Cup, the whole team turned around. Simeone’s side have been trailing Real Sociedad since November. But Atletico moved up to third place for the first time since Sociedad’s goalless draw with Cadiz on Friday.
“I told the players two things, play with passion and heart,” Simeone said after the match yesterday. They already have talent. I like Atletico a lot. This club has a history of turning around in difficult times, I’ve seen that.’
