2022 saw the birth of the Apple Watch Ultra and in 2023 we will have minor updates to the entire range of the smartwatch. Just improvements to the chip that powers smartwatches—a little faster and maybe a little more efficient—but not much else. But that doesn’t mean the company isn’t planning future products with significant changes. It seems that when the device is ten years old, we will see something totally new, and it could be called Apple Watch X.
In terms of design, Apple’s smartwatch has changed little since the launch of the Series 4 in 2018 and the Apple Watch Ultra. But in 2024 or 2025—the device was introduced in 2014 and released in 2015—the company could release a Apple Watch X, with a completely renovated design. It would be a movement similar to the iPhone X, a generation in which the smartphone abandoned Touch ID and adopted Face ID, making the screen occupy the entire front.
The design of the Apple Watch X would be much slimmer, even changing the way the straps are attached to the watch. According to a report published by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg in your Sunday newsletter, the current system takes up too much space. This could be used for a larger battery or other components, according to people involved in developing the product.
Apple Watch X: Magnetic straps and microLED screens
The new strap fastening system on the Apple Watch X It would be by means of magnets, although, according to the report, it is possible that it will not be ready for the launch of the device in 2024 or 2025. In addition, new microLED screens with the same brightness and contrast of the OLEDs that are currently used.
MicroLED screens, since they are not made with organic compounds, are more durable, brighter, and can remain active for longer without degrading their performance. They are also capable of offering a dynamic range that is slightly better than OLED.
With higher brightness, Apple could offer a smartwatch with increasing visibility, even in extremely strong natural light conditions. And, being inorganic compounds, provide a longer useful life.
Finally, according to the report, the Apple Watch X would incorporate technology for monitoring blood pressure. Something that has been rumored since 2022 and that the company has not been able to fully resolve in such small sizes.
Those are the news, for the moment of the possible Apple Watch X. Our recommendation is that, those people with a Series 6, Series 7 or Series 8, is that do not update to the Series 9 that will be announced alongside the iPhone 15, and wait for the announcements in 2024 or 2025.
