A cricketer died due to lightning during a cricket match in Gopalganj

A cricketer named Tamjid Ahmed (20) died due to lightning during a match at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Gopalganj.

The accident took place during a friendly match between Dhanmondi Club and Abhani Cricket Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased Tamjid Ahmed is the son of Imam Ali of Nikalakdim village of Aloa union of Bhuyapur upazila of Tangail district. He was a player of Dhanmondi Friends Cricket Academy.

Eyewitnesses and cricket players said that Dhaka’s Dhanmondi Club came to Gopalganj to play a friendly cricket match with Abahani Cricket Academy. Today, during the friendly match between the two teams, there was a sudden lightning strike while Dhanmondi Club was fielding. With a loud sound, all the players fell to the ground with their hands over their ears. Later, even though everyone got up, Tamjid did not get up and he was quickly rescued and taken to Gopalganj 250 bed general hospital where the doctor on duty declared Tamjid dead.

Kazi Mahabubul Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Gopalganj and President of the District Sports Association, visited the spot after receiving the news of the accident and rushed to the hospital. Later he contacted the family members of the deceased Tamjid. Deputy Commissioner Kazi Mahbubul Alam also said that the process of handing over the dead body to his family is underway.
